The Galápagos penguin is one of the banded penguins, the other species of which live mostly on the coasts of Africa and mainland South America. The Galapagos penguin is the most northerly occurring species of penguin in the world, endemic to the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.

They are believed to have travelled to the islands from Antarctica on the Humboldt Current, an ocean current of cold, nutrient-rich water that travels up along the west coast of South America.
